English bulldogs when cared for properly are the sweetest dogs you’ll ever own.

With their lovable personalities and mellow temperaments, it’s easy to fall in love. There are a number of tips English bulldog owners can use to ensure that your majestic bulldog is healthy at all times.
The most obvious tip is to feed your bulldog a proper and nutritious diet. When buying dog food from a commercial store, make sure that the ingredients are high in lean meat. Try to find a dog food with little to no preservatives that’s passed USDA inspection. It’s best to provide two meals per day.
You can also feed your bulldog:
  • Fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Lean turkey, beef or chicken
  • Cottage cheese and yogurt
  • Oatmeal or brown rice
Exercise is another important factor for English bulldog health. Younger bulldogs have more energy, but you’ll need to make sure your dog gets exercise throughout his life. Keep excess weight off your bulldog when he is young, and you’ll prevent obesity later in life. You want your wonderful bulldog to always have energy to play!
English bulldogs have common health problems, like any breed. These dogs are sensitive to temperature and are more prone to skin conditions than other dogs. Clean your bulldog’s wrinkles a few times per week, as their folds can attract bacteria. Putting Vaseline on his nose is helpful as well. Try to groom and brush his skin every other day to remove dead hair and keep skin healthy.
Other general health issues bulldogs have are eye problems (yellow discharge or swollen eyelids), difficulty breathing, stomach problems and bone/joint problems. As long as you keep a close eye on these and other issues, you can catch problems early. Always take your bulldog in for regular veterinary check-ups.
Here are a few other basic English bulldog healthcare tips:
  • Bathe your bulldog whenever he is dirty—frequent baths aren’t necessary
  • Keep rawhide toys away, as bulldogs can chew them up and choke
  • Have your bulldog’s nails cut about every 2 weeks
  • Since bulldogs are prone to skin problems, it’s important to keep fleas away—either with flea medications or anti-flea shampoo rinses
  • Help your English bulldog regulate his temperature, as they are prone to overheating. If it’s too hot outside, keep your dog inside.
With these tips, you’ll ensure that your English bulldog is healthy and happy at all times!
